Jawsaw (Electric Chain Saw) by Talented Designer/Architect
2011 - 2012, Silver A' Engineering and Technical Design Award Winner
Our team was motivated to develop a safer chain saw to reduce the potential for accidents and injuries resulting from the exposed spinning chain. We are confident the JawSaw is a safe and reliable alternative to the traditional chain saw and could have a dramatic effect on reducing the current number of chain saw related injuries.
Our primary objective was to design a chain saw that is safer for the novice user, but also provides improved ease of use and is better adapted to the specific needs of the homeowner. For the safety concern, the chain is enclosed by a jawguard, which prevents unintended contact with the chain by the user. For improved ease of use, we introduced a proprietary, patented chain tensioning system, which prevents over-tightening of the chain, a common novice mistake, and a self-lubricating chain oiler, which many beginners tend to overlook. Finally, our re-design uses a plunge mechanism to actuate the pivoting blade, making the new design intuitive for even a first-time chain saw user.
Design Challenges
The internal project brief asked our design and R&D team to develop a safer chain saw to reduce the potential for accidents and injuries resulting from improper use of chain saws by non-experienced home owners and do-it-yourselfers. The brief also challenged the team to provide a new saw design which would provide all of the functions and features required by the novice homeowner user. The team was very excited about this challenge since the chain saw can be an intimidating and dangerous tool for most novice users and also the basic design has not changed since its introduction by Andreas Stihl in 1930’s.
Production Technology
From an engineering point of view, the Jawsaw Electric Chain Saw by Talented Designer/Architect is a good example of a highly-developed project.
