Virgo (Chair) by Shayne Smith
2011 - 2012, Golden A' Furniture and Homeware Design Award Winner
Inspiration
Truthfully, I was watching the movie 'Underworld Evolution' and I thought to myself, "I really like that character but I wish he was sitting in a better chair". Something more suitable; more vampires meet 2050. I incorporated this spark, with my love for the 17th Century Italian Design, to come up with this piece.
Creativity
Combining modern production techniques with traditional fabrics. I expanded on the concept of Mélange, by fusing together different techniques and mediums, namely photography, leather, bronze casting, and carved metal, which resulted into these amazingly unique creations. Specifically, in this design, I synthesized reflective organic bronze forms with rich luminous materials, which resulted in this fluid chair.
Design Challenges
Shayne Smith did not encounter any design challenges while designing the award winning Virgo Chair.
Production Technology
From an engineering point of view, the Virgo Chair by Shayne Smith is a good example of a highly-developed project.
