Waterfall (Chair and Armchair) by Jorge Prieto
2012 - 2013, Bronze A' Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Award Winner
In our days mass production and consume is affecting our environment. We thought there had to be a better way to take profit of the waste we produce and create sustainable and stylish products.
Waterfall is a new line of chairs and armchairs created from the combination of different used plywood planks that have been bent with just one mold and joined together, creating a unique design. This design can be stacked for an easy storage and the productions are fast and cheap.
Design Challenges
After the research we looked for better sustainable solutions. A way to recycle materials would be perfect in this case and the product could have a better design than many others. We thought of molding plywood through a vacuum-bag process which is the cheapest and easiest way to produce today. The only difference is that we would be molding a new line of furniture products with used plywood layers instead of using new ones. This also makes each chair unique as there aren't two chairs with the same color, textures, or plank length. You can also choose to upholster it in any color you prefer.
Production Technology
The production starts with the selection of different plywood layers some companies just throw away. This layer is cut to different sizes and glued together while they take shape by vacuum-bag molding using just one mold. After the chair is built, a transparent ecologic water varnish is applied which protects the wood but allows you to see the color and texture of the plank. The chair and armchair can also be upholstered with natural wool or waterproof fabric for outdoors if desired.
