Commodia (Chest of Drawers) by Eckhard Beger
2012 - 2013, Bronze A' Furniture and Homeware Design Award Winner
Inspiration
For many years, Eckhard Beger has had a strong aesthetic interest for harmonious curves (often as a pair, like two music voices which are linked to each other while being independent) and by extension, for multidimensional surfaces (organic shapes and surfaces) which can be derived from them. The Commodia project originated from his wish to design a chest of drawers with organic shapes thereby overcoming design limitations of plane surfaces. The Commodia design is contemporaneous with a classic inspiration.
Creativity
Commodia is a chest of drawers with organic surfaces and shapes. Its high-end appearance is emphasized by the use of strongly figured wood species and by outstanding workmanship. Its shape is underlined by the contrast between the wood colour of surfaces and the wood colour of edges. In addition, materials and finishes of hidden surfaces are given the same special attention to quality than those of visible surfaces resulting in aesthetic concept without discontinuity.
Design Challenges
The design process for Commodia was iterative. The challenge was to translate individual curves (as building blocks for the body profiles) into a harmonious 3-dimensional outline. This resulted in a maturation process requiring numerous iterative steps with as many modifications.
Production Technology
A combination of traditional master craftsmen skills and the selective use of modern technologies is necessary for the manufacturing of Commodia. The skills of master craftsmen are required to ensure high-end workmanship (e.g. for the application of complex veneer motives and quality manual finishes). 3D veneer technology is used for the manufacturing of the organic shaped surfaces of the furniture. Figured veneers and wood species are matched in pairs for their aesthetic contrast and harmony.
