Bird&berry Collection (Baby Furniture) by Aija Priede-Sietina and Daneks Sietins
2012 - 2013, Golden A'
Inspiration
The image of children's room emerged when we as parents observed how our children began to crawl, tried to stand up, and then took their first steps. The child gave a signal, as parents we understood it and later acted on it as professionals. We found it fascinating right from the beginning-watching each piece of furniture develop starting from the many sketches and become a real product, after many prototypes and hard work. And with each step we came closer to real bird&berry collection.
Creativity
With the collection we tried to find a balance between the parents and the childs understanding of aesthetics. It combines simple elegance with functionality. Sloped lines are a reminder that nature doesn't think in straight lines thus evoking curiosity and imagination of little ones, to think outside the box and to promote the child to become in to an independent person. Child oriented and safe design is characteristic to all the range.
Design Challenges
The hardest part was adapting the furniture for serial product as from the beginning it was made for our own children.
Production Technology
The furniture manufacturing requires machine work as all the details should be precise as well as craftsmen work to get the final touch. Basic material is Baltic birch plywood, cut with CNC and treated with water based finishes, suitable for children.
