Crossing The Line (Theatre Design) by Johanna Mårtensson
2012 - 2013, Golden A' Performing Arts, Style and Scenery Design Award Winner
For the play we read The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo and other experiments around what makes evil actions. My goal was to find a space where the audience could be both the judges as the witnesses, aswell as beeing a part in this intelectual experiment. I looked at schools, laboratorys, hospitals aswell as courts and conference rooms.
A reasoning monologue about cause and effect, what leads us to commit actions, that we would not have considered possible. By placing the audience around a circleshaped table, like the court of Europe, I wanted to create a room where the audience involves, interacts and reflects about their own part in a course of events.
Design Challenges
As always, the challenge was to find the right idea for the text, as this clever script was very reasoning and intelectual, the goal I set up was to create a room that involved the audience in the philosophic turn of mind.
Production Technology
An audience of 48 people where invited to sit around the table.
