As1 (Shuttlecock) by Ian Hughes
2012 - 2013, Silver A'
Inspiration
This was a semester long project in which each student was told to create a consumer grade product for their assigned sport
Creativity
This is a training shuttlecock used for the sport of badminton. What sets this shuttle apart from existing shuttles is its adjustability. The user can change the size of the tail feathers, which in turn changes the flight and speed of the shuttlecock. Allowing players to focus on different aspects of their game. Either set it to fast mode to work on their back court and highten their reflexes. Or slow mode to work on their short court game. The medium setting being the standard shuttle size for regular play. Existing feathered shuttlecocks fly great but are often destroyed after several points. Rendering them useless. This shuttle is made from strong and light Rip Stop Nylon. Allowing each shuttle to have a longer life span, without sacrificing playability. The color of this shuttle makes it really stand out, making it easier to see during play. Perfect for beginners and professionals.
Design Challenges
Ian Hughes did not encounter any design challenges while designing the award winning As1 Shuttlecock.
Production Technology
From an engineering point of view, the As1 Shuttlecock by Ian Hughes is a good example of a highly-developed project.
