Morph (Side Table) by Daisuke Nagatomo
2016 - 2017, Golden A' Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Award Winner
Inspiration
Morph side table is inspired by the idea of transformation of traditional paper to future paper technology, which has been visualized by the dynamic contour of morphing shape. E-ink technology, which is primary used for electric paper such as electric books or tag, are currently looking for the new applications especially as a surface treatment. Morph addresses the new possibility of furniture surface, which can be changed the pattern automatically to fit different space or atmosphere.
Creativity
Morph incorporates E-ink Prism, Electrical ink laminated film, with corrugated cardboard structure. The table top changes the pattern as programmed with very low electricity voltage. The morphing form of curvature symbolizes traditional paper to new generation electrical paper. The basic form is model in 3D program and generate 90 sections to cut with CNC machine, and carefully glue laminated with hand. As a piece of furniture, Morph shows very strong characteristic to transform surrounding atmosphere, yet gently fit with the space.
Design Challenges
The most challenging part of Morph was to consider how to incorporate E-ink Prism system with the cardboard structure since it comes with computer board for controlling the electricity to the E-ink and also its switch. The detailed scanning of the E-ink product was operated and translated into digital file. By articulating optimized inclusion system, we followed the exact procedure of fabrication.
Production Technology
Cardboard CNC Manufacturing with hand lamination with paper glue
