Citywood (Artwork) by Hubert Roguski
2017 - 2018, Golden A' Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design Award Winner
Inspired by a actual city the project shows a city space as a 3d object. Thin yet very complex street pattern, cut in wood layers looks like minimalist modern abstract art.
CityWood is a wooden map artwork. City streets, water and landscape are represented by separate wooden layers. Each layer is precisely cut using laser technology. It is a three dimensional design that combines modern technology (laser cutting, GIS, OSM Data) with the beauty of wood and craftsmanship.
Design Challenges
The final design is a product of a long battle between wood and city pattern. To find this unique proportion of width and depth of the each street, many prototypes were created. The color of the wood of each layer makes the whole design readable and visible as a city map.
Production Technology
The design is a multilayered city pattern object framed in wooden frame. Each layer of polished fine quality plywood is cut using laser technology.
