Revitalization of Abandoned Village (Hot Spring) by Hanxiao Liu
2018 - 2019, Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award Winner
Inspiration
The project REVITALIZATION OF An Abandoned Stone Village started ten years ago. The owner’s original intention was to save only several yards in his deserted home village to leave childhood memories. Later, inspired by experts of village construction who activate ancient villages by art, the idea was extended to the rebirth of ravine lands. REVITALIZATION OF An Abandoned Stone Village is meant to redefine one of the villages named Denghua Village.
Creativity
Design of the architecture and space first provides a platform for retrospecting the value of history, bringing the tools and daily necessities that have been left in memory back to “home”; secondly, it creates new space for new rural lifestyle. The combination preserves the impress of rural life while providing possibility of flexible use. In the construction mode, it can be summarized as preservation of the site, reconstruction with recycled materials, and new construction with new materials.
Design Challenges
The project is surrounded by spectacular natural landscape, so the challenge was to figure out a perfect construction plan to avoid any damages to the precious natural resources. Meanwhile, due to the careful selection of construction mode, the protection of the original architecture and the collection and reuse of old building materials, then would require a much more meticulous planning scheme for the process of construction.
Production Technology
In the construction mode, it can be summarized as preservation of the site, reconstruction with recycled materials, and new construction with new materials. In the content, central area of the project provides space for party and public space; in the hidden woods and mountains, a quiet experience of seclusion is available. Landscape and natural spring water will also run through the entire site to show the three elements of new rural life, that is, "woods", "hidden" and "spring water".
